STATUS: Archived

This repository has been archived in favor of an improved, updated, and hopefully cleaner version, which can be found here!. This new version was created from the ground up, rather than starting with the base template I first found and forked. I owe a huge debt to @tahongawaka for laying the groundwork and inspiring/enabling me to make something that fit my workflow.

When I started making this template, I knew nothing about the inner-workings of LilyPond. Armed with a mostly-complete notation manual, too much free time, and whatever scheme knowledge I had retained from one unit of one class in college (a.k.a. very little), I gradually managed to put together something that got pretty close to correct! I learned a tremendous amount along the way, to the point where I wasn't just blindly changing parameters and copying in LSR code anymore. But by that point, functionality had been added blindly without thought for organization, simplicity, robustness, or ease-of-use. I decided I wanted to start over from the beginning and fix everything.

This repository has served me well. I am excited to use its successor for years to come.

Lilypond-BHS-Template

LilyPond does a very nice job of producing scores correctly notated, but the Barbershop Harmony Society has requirements for publication to maintain a consistent appearance across arrangements. The goal of this project is to allow the Barbershop arranger to worry more about the correct words and notes than whether the page looks right.

This repository specifies a template for LilyPond to make engraved scores that match the specifications in the Barbershop Notation Manual. The current implementation reflects the 2015-11-03 revision of the manual.

Description/History of the Project

This project is based heavily upon two sources: the original LilyPond-BHS-Template project started by Jeff Harris, and the ssaattbb.ly template file and other tkit.ly utilities provided with installations of LilyPond. The former supplied a number of helpful layout functions and modifications to produce the correct layout (e.g. moving grobs, paper block, etc.). The latter provided a flexible, extensible, easy-to-use template structure that made the template code much more reusable.

Also included are a number of useful markup functions for common BHS markup (e.g. voice crossing, denoting sections of music, etc.).
