Test Software and Setup Information for DILVERT ASIC

Concept of Operation

The DILVERT Cold Board must be supplied with power, START/STOP signals, and digital control/communications.

Digital control and communications is handled by an Arduino. The Arduino must also get a TRIGGER signal when STOP arrives at DILVERT. At each TRIGGER, the Arduino will read out the TDC result from DILVERT, and stream it over serial to the lab PC. DILVERT_HAL_Interface.py will capture this streamed data and write it to a CSV file.

Common Issues

Qfine is always 100 or always 0?

  • Check the bias voltages / connections. The fast chain and slow chain of the vernier must have significantly different bias voltages, or else the fast edge will never catch up to the slow edge, and you will see Qfine=100.
  • Check the pulsewidths of START and STOP. The pulse must last long enough for the data to be latched by (READY & SC_PASS).

Python streaming software cannot open the port ("Permission Denied")?

  • Is the Arduino Serial Monitor open? Arduino Serial Monitor and Python cannot access the same port at the same time.

Cannot program the Arduino Portenta (dfutils error)?

  • Make sure the Portenta drivers are installed in the Arduino IDE.
  • Make sure to run the Arduino IDE as an administrator.
  • Double-press the reset button on the Portenta. You should see it switch COM ports in the Arduino IDE. Now you should be able to program it.
