Denote is getting very popular as an alternative to org-roam. Zetteldeft is no longer being maintained.

Probably would make sense to add as an option in the org layer like org-roam and org-brain.

Could you expand on why? My impression with denote is that it's compatible with bits of org-mode, but only optionally so: it doesn't so much feel like it has org-mode as a dependency and it enhances it; a denote layer makes a bit more sense to me, and I've already done a simple, local one for denote and I don't use org-mode at all... (not that I'd necessarily propose that my private layer's code should be the one that everyone uses... 8D)
