OpenTaal
Stichting OpenTaal is a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands which creates free and open writing help for the Dutch language. A language that is mainly used in the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname by some 25 million people.
The products OpenTaal currently actively maintains are:
- Dutch spelling checker which is used in web browsers, LibreOffice, Adobe products and many more software that work with Hunspell or Nuspell
- Dutch word list
- Dutch hyphenation patterns
- Dutch autocompletion for Android
In the near future, also a Dutch word information website, Dutch word sorting, Dutch thesaurus and several other small projects will get actively maintained.
Sponsorship is important as our foundation needs to hire software developers to develop the tools we need to efficiently and effectively maintain the writing help files. One hand, to work with editorial work and crowdsourcing to stay up to day with new words that are introduced in the Dutch language. On the other side, to offer formats so that our help files can be used by more and more software programs.
Reaching this many sponsors via GitHub would enable build the tools we need to speed up the release of hyphenation patterns. Hyphenation patterns (afbreekpatronen) for Dutch have not been upgraded since 1996, when there were even other spelling rules that applied. Additionally, hyphenation patterns greatly help real reading sentences with long Dutch concatenated words on small screens.
