Missing split line command

The split line command on linux have no binding (at least so far), but it's cmd + shift + l on Mac.

I must confess that I have never used this command so far. I tried it just now, but it isn't entirely clear to me what it does. Do you have a short example (or even better an animated GIF) to show how to use it and what it does?
