feature: cloud storage for data files

I'd like to be able to store data files in object storage like S3. This works better for container management systems.

Thanks for the suggestion.
To be honest, I won’t personally be spending time implementing this, as I won’t be using this, and as I want the project to remain lean, with as few dependencies as at all possible.

That being said: I would certainly be willing to consider a PR for this.
