Possibly sources for validation and calibration of OSM estimates:

  1. http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/collection/gpw-v3
    • resolution approx. 1km)
    • Includes future projections
  2. http://www.worldpop.org.uk/
    • resolution 100m
    • static estimates for year 2013 only

The TODO: Calibrate these two against one another, and then calibrate OSM data with the result.

Population projections for all global cities over 300K out to 2030 are given this UN site.

Great stuff. Just presented at what seems to be the computational geometer's equivalent of the Linux hotel and it went well and makes me want to go go go with this: http://www.dagstuhl.de/en/program/calendar/semhp/?semnr=17282

Yeah, that one looks particularly promising. It's a synthesis all loads of different sources

I really hope this one comes good. FYI my boss is giving me heat about the $/hr issue, really annoying.
