Not finding the results the customer would expect (different examples) - how to tackle in general?

We are using smile/elasticsuite 2.10.4 and are not very happy with the search results of some cases.

Also we found out the the preview in the admin panel on the optimizers page differs from the frontend results.

In the admin panel it works (searching for "drohn" (mistyped) finds the correct articles from drohnn), but in the frontend: no results.

What is a good approach to tackle such issues and to do the fine tuning?

We still believe in the elasticsuite as a good search and don't want to switch to an other 3rd party solution.

I can provide more examples, but first wanted to ask how other's tackle such kind of problems in general and how the single examples can be debugged down efficiently.

Also during debugging we were wondering if config changes require a reindex or during testing different configuration, those should apply immediately after Magento cache clear?
