Add a GM Guide "Brief" for Experienced GM's and Quick-Reference Section

Once GM Guide v1 PR is folded in, let's take the key elements of it and create a shortened "Brief" (similar to the Player Guide) that experienced GM's can handle as an easy reference and for a quick 'here's what's different in DofA and how you can handle mechanics" with a section almost like a glossary or quick reference for unique terms and links to the GM Guide Full for ease of reference and access for experienced GMs.

This gives us the ability to keep the GM Guide Full as an all-encompassing doc designed for new and experienced GMs alike but approaching it from a 'new-GM first' design perspective.

Original suggestion from PR #88 from @CBroz1:

Regarding the comments on sections for New vs. experienced DMs: maybe the current gm guide is GMGuide_Full and it could/should be accompanied by GMGuide_Brief which is barebones targeted at experienced GMs (who already know how what it means to work with players and balance and encounter). For example

Cards not dice
Set DR, hit TC. Apply Mod to DR
For all values, aim for <10. e.g., split boss health to phases
Just enough to run a level1 session in 30m, Good for words to ctrl+f in the full doc

I propose renaming the GM Brief and Player Guide Brief to be rendered on site as:

  • Quick Start Guide (Player)
  • Quick Start Guide (GM)

We can rename them more officially (and open to suggestions on naming convention) down the road, but "Brief" vs. "Full" is non-intuitive to newcomers. Our "Brief" Player Guide is also already using the term "Quick Start Guide" as the first H2 on the page.

If we mark them as Quick Start it identifies two things:

  1. This won't take me too long to read
  2. I can get started once I've finished the guide

Quick Start for Players should be very tactical of what they need to do in play, what major rules and terms are, and boiled down instructions of things that have more detail in the PGF (and can be directly linked there as well).

Quick Start for GMs should cover the following:

  1. Intro to GMing
  2. Key info and Terms used in DofA (and TTRPGs in general)
  3. The importance of setting DRs and having clear objectives/outcomes (Overview of skill checks, attributes, mods, TCs, etc.)
  4. How to run an Adventure
    • Can also include a link to a streamlined 'intro' adventure designed for Quick Start players, rather than a full narrative it just covers Skill Checks, TCs, narrative interaction, and a single intro combat
  5. Instructions on how to introduce DofA to a new player (since the GM will likely be the one bringing new people to the table)
    • How to guide players through reading the Quick Start Player Guide (and instructing them to send this to players ahead of time)
    • How to walk players through the Target Card system and the importance of establishing a strong foundational base of understanding around TCs and DRs
  6. Emphasis and instruction on how every table is different and ultimately each GM is responsible for running the game that is best for their table, and able to interpret the rules however they see fit in the moment
  7. Final 2-3 sentences can link them back to the Community as well as the Full GM Guide to learn more, stay connected, submit their thoughts/feedback/idea, etc.

On doc renaming - I'd prefer docs get named roughly as MajorTopic_MinorTopic.md, but doc titles for the website are easy to change here

Perfect, I think keeping internal doc naming convention/structure works just fine it'll be about how we frame the documents as part of site nav that I think the above proposal comes into play.

For GM Brief and Player Brief I would propose we render/order the side-nav as following:

Mechanics

  • Player Quick Start
  • Player Full Guide
  • GM Quick Start
  • GM Full Guide
  • ...
