How to get a server setup when installing DIRAC in development mode

When we install DIRAC in development mode we use something along these lines:

git clone https://github.com/DIRACGrid/DIRAC.git
git checkout [whateverversion weareafter]
pip install -e DIRAC

Unfortunately we then seem to end up with a client install which sadly lacks pyyaml.
Stackoverflow suggested we could install the server using a syntax along these lines:

pip install --install-option="--extras-require=server" -e DIRAC 

which fails with the error:

Installing collected packages: DIRAC
  Running setup.py develop for DIRAC
    error: subprocess-exited-with-error
    
    × python setup.py develop did not run successfully.

    note: This error originates from a subprocess, and is likely not a problem with pip.

I assume this is my bad, but how am I meant to do this ?
